Esther
Passaris, the women representative for Nairobi County, has called upon women to
be allowed an abortion at their own will.
Passaris
lamented how women in the slums were opting for abortion, leading to deaths
that could not be avoided, in addition to alarming abandonment of infants.
"They
should not give birth to children to suffer. They should not have children they
cannot take care of," insisted Passaris.
The county
women rep gave her address during the 9th Sexual and Reproductive Health and
Rights Conference at KICC, and which has been ongoing since February 10, 2020.
The Nairobi
women rep. stood her grounds that she would fight to see that Prisca Akumu got
justice after Nation highlighted her plight.
Ms. Akumu,
a disabled woman, got sterilized without her will, an action that Ms. Passaris
termed as a violation of reproductive rights for the victim.
The
fallopian tubes for one Ms. Akumu got tied by medics in 2007, after having
undergone three births via Caesarian Section, adding that she was physically
disabled.
