We must resist MPs’ quest to increase their salaries

One of the reasons most Kenyans hate their MPs is their insatiable desire to increase their salaries and allowances at any opportunity.

After making promises of how they will improve the lives of the people before elections, their priorities shift to how they will get rich as soon as they are voted in.

They award themselves hefty allowances and other monstrous perks. And their recent proposal to increase their pay was in bad taste, as always.

It shows how greedy these MPs are. However, we must also be proud of National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi for his statement that the proposal to increase MPs’ salaries is illegal. At least we have one sensible person in Parliament and we must all support him.

The tendency by MPs to increase their salaries has seen Kenyans demonize them. One wonders who will save Wanjiku if those elected to protect her interests no longer care.

We must do everything to stop extravagant use of public resources by MPs and government officials.
