Poaching of elephants has become a crisis in Africa and especially in Kenya. According to the Great Elephant Census, elephants had declined by 30% in a period spanning 8 years (2007-2014).

A study conducted by a team at Colorado State University also showed that up to 100,000 elephants were killed in Africa within three years that is, 2010 and 2012 because of the illegal poaching trade.
