Beneath the waves: Snorkelling in Kisite Mpunguti

[Jayne Rose Gacheri] I am back to Kisite Mpunguti for an adventure that combines the thrill of exploration with the serene beauty of marine life - swimming with the dolphins and snorkelling at Kisite Mpunguti! Kenya's stunning coastline along the Indian Ocean with its azure waters, vibrant coral reefs, a treasure trove of eye-catching sceneries, coupled with myriad activities, is always a welcome adventure. I arrived at the base for the tour to Kisite Mpunguti at 6.30 am, as the sun cast its golden glow on the crystal-clear waters. My adrenaline was building up in anticipation of my newest adventure. We left for the marine park after a drill on the dos and don'ts. Suleiman Abdi, the Captain and guide, assured me of the safety of my escapade beneath the ocean - probably after noticing my uneasiness. Soon, the moment of reality set in. I dreamily went through the drill of preparing for the dive - donning my snorkel gear. I felt a surge of adrenaline mingled with a hint of nervous anticipation as I prepared to jump off the cliff into the water below. In a haste, I looked around me, encouraged by the pristine beauty of the marine park - the coral reefs teeming with vibrant marine life. And then, as if choreographed by nature, a pod of dolphins appeared in the distance. I turn my attention to them as their sleek, grey bodies glided effortlessly through the water, their playful energy palpable even from afar. I could hardly contain my excitement as the dolphins drew closer, their inquisitive eyes seeming to meet mine, and for a moment, we were captivated by each other. "Jayne Rose, adventure awaits you beneath" Captain Abdi's voice cut across the enormous ocean, echoing back to my ears. Could I do this? I took a deep breath and before I pondered this, I slipped beneath the surface of the gentle warmth of the Indian Ocean (I think Abdi gave me a gentle push of encouragement). Then the movie began! In seconds, I felt the ocean embracing me! An underwater panorama unfolded. I was met by a kaleidoscope of amazing colours - anemones (soft, brightly colored sea creatures that resemble flowers and often live on rocks in the ocean), swaying gracefully. The fear and anxiety were gone as I felt safe from the "pull and release" motions of the lifebuoy. This gave me the confidence that the team above was monitoring my safety. For a moment I lost myself in this new world. With every stroke I made, I was brought deeper into the mesmerising world, and the worries of the surface melted away. The water was refreshingly cold against my skin, and I could feel the gentle push of the current as I snorkelled, the salty breeze carrying the invigorating scent of the ocean. As I snorkelled further, I encountered the majestic morning sunrays, their "wide wings" gliding through the water with an elegance that left me in awe. The reef's natural beauty was a living canvas, painted with the vibrant colours of coral formations. However, it was not just the marine life that captured my heart. I experienced profound connection to the ocean itself, the rhythmic pulse of the waves and the symphony of sounds that created a soothing underwater melody. With each plunge, my sense of security went up - the sea life and animals were harmless, and soon I relaxed to enjoy the gentle hum of the water, the distant calls of dolphins and the occasional click of a crab's pincers (it can be scary), formed a harmonious tune that resonated with my soul. The mingling of this scent with the sunscreen earlier applied, produced a subtle aroma that seemed to attract schools of fish that darted playfully through the corals, creating an ever-changing tapestry of hues and shapes, intricate patterns of the coral formations - the scenes were indescribable. An overwhelming sense of wonder enveloped me, and for a moment, I thought I had entered a different realm. Time seemed to stand still as I snorkelled with these magnificent beings, occasionally touching the tens of the "ocean gems" protected by the safety of my snorkelling gear. Later, I learnt from Abdi that some of the stunning marine life I had encountered included: colourful reef fish - strikingly beautiful angelfish, playful clownfish, part of the over 250 species of reef fish, sea turtles, dolphins, stingrays, eagle rays, octupuses, sea sausages (I was fascinated by these two), and vibrant coral gardens, home to a variety of fascinating marine creatures. A pull on the lifebuoy, reminded me this was the end of my adventure beneath the waves. I reluctantly let myself be transported back to the surface, my soul forever touched by this extraordinary experience. As I surfaced, a few drops of the salty water entered my mouth reminding me of the vastness of the ocean, nd as I floated back on the surface, I felt the warm sun on my back, I lost myself to the rhythmic sound of my breathing through the snorkel, created sense of tranquilty. Still, I was in a reverie even as the Captain and his team pulled me back to the boat. As I sat on the edge of the boat with the waves lapping at my feet, I made a solemn promise - to write about this experience to contribute to the story about the need to protect and preserve the ocean's treasures for future generations. I had discovered in this adventure beneath the waves lay a world of wonder, where every dive was a new adventure, and every moment a testament of the magic of the sea! Kisite Mpunguti Marine Park is a hidden gem off the southern coast, near Wasini Island. It is renowned for its vibrant coral formations and diverse marine life, making it a sought-after destination for snorkelling and diving enthusiasts.
