Battle for Kenya Basketball Federation Premier League play-offs slots intensifies

[Stafford Ondego, Standard] A series of mouthwatering clashes are lined up in the Kenya Basketball Federation (KBF) Premier League title hunt at Nyayo Gymnasium. On Friday, Men's champions Nairobi City Thunder will lock horns with Equity Bank Dumas in their second-leg encounter even as they look to extend their win record against the bankers. Thunder, who currently top the standings with 24 points from 12 outings will be out to maintain their unbeaten run as they seek to successfully defend their title without dropping points. They are also using the league games to test their new signings and analyse their strengths and weaknesses ahead of the 2025 Basketball Africa League (BAL) Nile Conference that is set for the BK Arena in Kigali, Rwanda, mid next month. Thunder whipped Equity Dumas, who are rebuilding after losing top players to Umoja Basketball Club at the beginning of the season, 116-60 in their first leg encounter played in February. Thunder will then entertain Eldonets Platinum in their second weekend tie tomorrow. In the first match of the day, relegation-threatened National Bank of Kenya (NBK) Phoenix will take on fellow bankers Stanbic Shields. Newbies NBK Phoenix, who are at the bottom of the table, will be hoping to bank maximum points in a bid to escape relegation. Former champions Ulinzi Warriors will tackle African Nazarene University (ANU) Wolfpacks tomorrow in their first weekend encounter. On Sunday, the soldiers will clash with Stanbic Shields in their second weekend fixture. A double victory will see them enhance their chances of finishing in the top four ahead of play-offs set for a later date. Warriors won seven and lost four of their first leg matches and will be hoping for a good start to the second leg. University of Nairobi (UoN) Terror will be out to cement their spot in the top eight when they take on Umoja Basketball Club tomorrow and Eldonets Platinum on Sunday. Terror currently have 18 points from 13 outings, and a victory against the two sides will push them to 22 and ensure that they remain in contention for a play-offs slot. ANU Wolfpacks will take on their Strathmore University counterparts, the Blades, on Sunday. A successful weekend out will see Wolfpacks, who are second from the bottom, move out of the relegation zone. They have played nine matches, won four and lost five, they will be looking to make the best out of their remaining two first-leg ties to save themselves from the demotion threat. In the women's title chase, defending champions Equity Bank Hawks, who are currently fourth on the table with 19 points from eight wins and three losses, will play Strathmore Swords tomorrow. They will be up against fellow bankers Stanbic Aces on Sunday. Hawks will be looking to overturn poor results against the varsity sides. During the first leg they have lost to Swords, Zetech University Sparks and United States International University of Africa (USIU-A) Flames. Winless Storms will be hunting their first win against UoN Dynamites.
