Kiragu wins inaugural Peace tournament at Railway Club

[Jonah Onyango, Standard] Home player Anthony Kiragu won the inaugural International Day of Peace Golf Tournament at the par 72 Railway Golf Club in Nairobi at the weekend. The handicap 15 player fired 42 stableford points to lift the National Cohesion and Intergration Commission (NCIC) of Kenya sponsored event that was contested by 140 participants from a cross the country. "I had 20 points in the opening nine, but played well in the second nine where I got 22 points," the father of four told Standard Sports. "This victory is important to me because I'm an agent of peace. I wanted peace to prevail after the General Elections that we had, so coming here toplay and win the tournament is such a great honour, it resonates well with the theme of the event "End Racism, Build Peace," Kiragu said. The Fidelity Insurance Operations Manager says he didn't have to prepare extensively for the competition as his fitness is currently on another level. "I have been having a stretch of winning streaks in the last two months, so, I was already fit and in my element while coming here to play. "I have been playing good golf of late, with recent overall victory just being two months ago. Last week, I was the Guest Winner in Thika," he said. Kiragu says part of his weekend victory was also contributed by the fine course at Railways. Meanwhile, Evans Murumba beat a team of 220 golfers to claim the Hackers title during the fourth Annual hackers golf Tournament played at the par 71 Nyali Golf and Country Club course in Mombasa County on Saturday. Playing off handicap 28 Murumba returned a score of 35 points to emerge the Ultimate Hacker in the day long 18 holes stable ford tournament organised by the Hackers Union and staged after a two years absence. "This has been one of those amazing days. Having been practicing since last week, determination, hope, focus and playing partners was enough to bring this victory," Murumba said. Immediate Mombasa Golf Captain Lawrence Odhiambo playing off handicap 13 was the first Hacker winner on a two way count back score of 34 points. At the Vet Lab Sports Club course on the same day, Stephen Kiaro of Kiambu Golf Club and David Gitao of Vet Lab Golf Club garnered a combined score of 52 points to qualify for the Word International Pairs in Spain. And at Muthaiga Golf Club, handicap 19 Stephen Ndungu carded 43 points to emerge the Men Category one winner on 43 points of the 2022 Captain's Club Golf Tour 2022. Handicap 19 Maina Ruo on a count back score of 41 points was the runners up after tying on the same score with handicap 8 Robert Ngugi.
