16-year-old Kaur defies odds to win Standard golf tournament

16-year-old Rasmeet Kaur defied all odds to beat a team of 200 Golfers in the 2021 Standard Group’s County  Classic Golf Tournament played at the par 71 Nyali Golf and Country Club Course in Mombasa County on Saturday.

The handicap 30 youthful Lady Golfer carded a compact 41 stable ford points to emerge the overall winner and register her first major victory.

Kaur, a member of Nyali  Golf  and Country Club who only started playing golf last year and was playing under pressure from veteran golfers, pumped 19 and 22 points in both nines to lead the tournament.

Although she blanked one hole and also hit five double bogeys, she soldiered on and was able to recover with a single level par and eleven bogeys to give her the victory.

“I just started playing golf here at Nyali last and infact the Covid-19 pandemic helped me spend most of my time practicing at the course. I thank the sponsors, my parents, grandparents, the Club and team mates for all their support and I promise to be back next year to defend the title,” Kaur said.

Fahmy Bajaber was the men winner in a two-way count back score of 40 points after tying on the same points with second placed Joseph Kaguru and third placed Sanjay Kotecha.

Christine Kinyeru with 40 points was the lady winner while Truphena Oyaro on 36 points was the runners up.

The Best Senior Prize was won by PM Kariuki on 38 points and Major Epapra Lagat was the Guest winner on 35 points.

Standard Group PLC Chief Executive Officer Orlando Lyomu who is a member of Limuru Golf Club carded 20 points to win the staff prize and left-handed golfer Niran Hiran was the junior winner with 39 points.

Standard Group sponsored the daylong 18 holes event in partnership with Salyani Properties.

Under the theme “on the Course for the Green Cause,” to create awareness against Climate Change in the ongoing County Series.

The highlight of the day was tree planting exercise on the course led by Standard Group CEO Lyomu and Nyali Club Chairman Taib Bajaber.

Lyomu said Standard Group was focusing on Climate change that has affected many golf courses and urged the club to take care of the planted trees.

“It was  an enjoyable day for everyone here  today and  I extend my thanks on behalf of the Group to all the golfers for turning up in large numbers, the club for the excellent preparations and our partners for their support. I can assure you that we are happy to be associated with the club and we promise to be back next year and hopefully to find the planted trees grow up,” Lyomu said.

Bajaber who was  flanked by his Vice Captain Omar Lewa said they were happy to have Standard Group in Nyali.
