Why Nyanza Golf Club is a thing of sports beauty

It is a common platitude that we don’t know what we’ve got until it is gone.

I strongly feel this old truth whenever I leave the Nyanza Golf Club. I would find it easy to settle and fit into this club if only it were not too far from my home.

The golf course at the northernmost shore of Lake Victoria is a thing of beauty, which is not so foolish as show us all at once.

Each hole is a discovery and presents a challenge. We play over Kisat River on some of the holes, with children watching curiously.

The golf course architects in their wisdom placed the tees of two holes right next to the preferred path of hippos that come out to graze at night.

The hippo can, in their midday slumber, be heard occasionally granting in approval of a well-struck tee shot.

After the round of golf, the 19th hole of Nyanza Golf Club is a convivial party.

The men and charming ladies of Kisumu will make any stranger feel welcome. After combating the Par 70 course in the hot sun, sitting with a cold beer at the homely club house, watching the sunset over Lake Victoria is bliss.

This weekend, The Standard Group will host golfers from Kisumu, Kakamega, Kisii, Kericho and a few from other regions.

This is part of the popular Standard County Classic that the group has hosted in the last few years. So far, 100 hundred golfers are drawn to play and there will be room for a few post entries.

The Standard Group CEO Orlando Lyomu, will host the golfers and the partners from the region.

“The Standard County Classic is not another run-off-the-mill corporate golf sponsorship,” said Lyomu.

“We use these events to interact with our partners all over the country and get valuable feedback on all our products.

“The Standard County Classic at Nyanza Golf Club is all about the honourable company of our customers from the region. I am looking forward to meeting and interacting with them,” he said.
