Fact-check: Okiya Omtatah denies claims that he has gone to court to block school reopening

Political activists Okiya Omtatah has denied claims that he has moved to court to block the re-opening of schools scheduled for Monday, October 12.

The claim was purported in a tweet by @Kimanzi_Don has garnered 365 retweets and 1,800 so far and many of the quoted replies taking the statement as true.

“Activist Okiya Omtata moves to court to oppose the move by Education CS George Magoha to have school re-opened on October 12, 2020 for Grade 4, Class 8 and Form 4 learners. Argues Government hasn't yet put up strained measures to tackle Covid-19,” read the tweet.

While speaking to KTN, Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Secretary-General Wilson Sossion has assured Kenyans that schools are ready and since the curve has flattened, there is no reason to keep children at home.

“We are satisfied schools are safe to re-open and has been guided by the World Health Organization,” said Sossion.

Students in Grade 4, Class Eight and Form Four are expected back to school from Monday joining their university counterparts who resumed school on Monday, October 5.
