Achievement in any aspect of life, from business to being in good physical shape, requires dedication coupled with unrelenting self-discipline.

It’s often easier said than done, but that doesn’t make self-discipline an unattainable goal. Here’s how to get yourself focused.

1. Have a goal worth fighting for

Find something that comes from within you that you’re willing to get out of your comfort zone for. Just thinking of the goal should send adrenaline rushing through your body. The goal should be strong enough to take you through the difficult and stressful stretches. If you find the right motivation, nothing can stand between you and making your dreams come true. Look for something that’s in line with your health, family, money or your personal development.

2. Break down the goal into bite-sized chunks

Deconstruct the goal into smaller chunks that are easier to manage. For instance, if your goal is to save Sh3,000 at the end of the month, you’ll need to set aside Sh100 a day. Breaking down the goal gives you an understanding of what you’re about to do, what it takes to do it and how you can achieve it.

3. Remove distractions

You need to be in control of your environment to get rid of distractions. If your biggest obstacle is your phone, put it in your bag or pocket and purpose not to look at it at certain times in the day when you need to focus on your goal. Let your family and friends in on your plans so they also give you the space to achieve your dreams.

4. Prioritise your goals

The idea behind what you’re doing is that the goal, once achieved, will change your life for the better. As a result, you need to give it your attention and pride of place in your schedule of activities. Don’t turn it into a by-the-way.

5. Don’t wait for the right time

The stars are never going to align just right for the things that matter. And working towards your goal isn’t going to be seamless. Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt was once asked how it feels to be the fastest man on earth. He said winning a sprint was the easy part – the hard part was the training. If you want to hit your goals, you’ve got to just start working on the future. And there’s no better time than the present to begin.

6. Force yourself to do it

Your mind controls your body. If your mind is strong enough, you can force your body to perform certain tasks. Let your willpower take control – it’s not going to be a smooth ride, but remember, you’re doing it for something that matters.
