Four people have died following a road accident involving a lorry and a motorcycle in Homa Bay County.

The lorry, which was ferrying soapstone from Kisii, hit the motorcycle at Kasimba Junction near Oyugis along Kisii – Kisumu Highway Rachuonyo South Sub- County.

According to eyewitnesses who spoke to The Standard, the motorcycle was carrying three passengers from Nyang’iela Trading Centre (the General direction of Kisii Town) towards Oyugis town.

However, upon entering the junction at Kasimba, the lorry hit them. The deceased, who included two men (including the rider) and two women perished on the spot.

According to Charles Okach, an eye witness, the lorry hooted to alert the rider to give way after the rider allegedly joined the highway without taking any road safety precautions.

"The driver of the lorry tried to alert him to give way but it was too late since both of them were moving at a high speed," said Okach.

After hitting the motorcycle, residents say, the lorry lost control and overturned in a ditch.

Residents of Kasimba have called on the Kenya National Highway Authority (KeNHA) to erect bumps on the two roads to reduce road carnage incidents.

Rachuonyo South Sub-County Police Commander Lilies Wachira confirmed the incident and urged road users to be careful by observing traffic rules.

“I urge drivers and riders to observe traffic rules. This will help us reduce accidents and loss of lives,” Wachira said.

The lorry driver sustained injuries and was rushed to Rachuonyo Sub-County Hospital.

The bodies of the deceased have been moved to Rachuonyo South Sub-county hospital mortuary.
