A union has urged the Ministry of Labour to investigate foreign companies undertaking various projects in the country for alleged abuse of workers’ rights.

Speaking at Afraha Stadium in Nakuru during Labour Day celebrations, the Kenya Building, Timber and Construction Industries Workers Union Secretary Maurice Shisoka said the companies should be regularly inspected to curb exploitation.

“With the high number of Government projects being awarded to foreign companies we have seen the foreigners abusing Kenyan workers physically and financially. We call for inspection of their operations and prosecution of those operating outside the legal framework,” said Mr Shisoka.

He also accused the companies of giving jobs that Kenyans could do to foreigners.

“There are many foreigners working in the country without the relevant job permits. The Government should smoke them out and ensure that jobs that can be done by the locals are awarded to them, according to the dictates of the law,” he said.

Kenya Union of Commercial Food and Allied Workers Secretary Thomas Ochola opposed proposed amendments to the Labour Relations Act.

“We won’t hesitate to call a nationwide strike if the amendments are done,” he said.
