Youth earn Sh5m from Huduma Kenya projects

The youth are making up to Sh5 million monthly through the Huduma Kenya Programme, Public Service, Youth and Gender Affairs Cabinet Secretary Sicily Kariuki has said.

“Cyber Cafes in the Huduma Centres are run by the youth, creating opportunities for self-employment,” she said ahead of the State House Youth Summit to be held today. The youth run Huduma Centre internet cafes in various parts of the country.

Kariuki said Huduma Kenya Programme has been empowering the youth by ensuring 30 per cent of its procurement opportunities are set aside for them. Revenue earned by the youth is likely to rise as more Huduma Centres are operationalised.

Over 40 Huduma Centres are fully operational in 36 counties, offering up to 45 services each. Five more Huduma Centres are scheduled to be opened by end of next month. This will bring the total number of the centres to 45 in 41 counties out of the targeted 47.

The new centres will be opened in Murang’a, Lamu, Marsabit and Narok counties.

She says the centres have become the preferred destination for youth who seek services on their High Education Loans Board (HELB). “So far, we have served over 650,000 youth in our centres”, she said.

At the same time, Kariuki announced that 50,000 Young adults aged 18-29 will be placed into meaningful career paths by 2019 through Private Sector Partnerships for Youth Empowerment.

She said through the programme named Tujiajiri, the youth with be provided with internships and employment opportunities by 2020.

She said through Youth Empowerment, 60,000 youth have been provided basic skills training,while 1,500 of them will have been placed in jobs in the formal sector. And a further 2,138 have been trained for six months and funding availed for them to start businesses.
