New constitution holds key to a better Kenya-says Kibaki

By James RatemoPresident Mwai Kibaki has urged all Kenyans to support implementation of the new Constitution if Kenya is to remain united.In his opening address at the ongoing Global Peace forum at KICC, Nairobi, Kibaki said the new constitution holds the key to a reformed Kenya hence the need to have it fully implemented."All Kenyans should take personal responsibility in building a cohesive country…Our new constitutional order provides us with opportunity to transform our nation…its successful implementation will pay dividends. I urge all Kenyans to support the implementation process for a new era of peace and prosperity," said Kibaki.Applauding organisers of the peace forum, Kibaki said the efforts will definitely contribute to harmonious co-existence in the world.The president reaffirmed Kenya’s quest to resolve her internal conflicts citing the successful resolution of the 2007 post-election crisis as an example."Resolution of the Post-election Violence is testimony to our commitment to peaceful resolution of any differences. We should nurture this as a nation," he said.He also called upon the youth to stamp down their feet and be counted among peace builders, saying they (youth) have unique role."I urge you all to use this platform (Global Peace Forum) to share best practices in areas of peace resolution and how we can use it for empowerment. We have as a nation to promote peace in our neighbourhood and world at large," he urged.The head of state also seozed the moment to implore world leaders to support peace building efforts in Somalia and Sudan.He particularly singled out the need for the international community to support IGAD’s efforts towards addressing security concerns in Somalia and to ensure Sudan’s peave program is fully implemented..Kibaki also called on Sudan to give peace a chance as they determine the future of the country."Success for search of durable peace requires global efforts by governments, bilateral and multilateral players," he appealed.In his parting shot, the president called on visitors at the forum to take time and sample Kenya’s rich heritage."Don't just pop in for the conference and go away...you don't just come to Nairobi and claim you have seen Kenya...have a little chance to see a little more of Kenya, go to the Rift Valley... and see how we live and what we are doing. We welcome you. I know you will love it," he said amid applause.
