Milk plant established to boost dairy production in Western Kenya

KAKAMEGA: Small-scale dairy farmers in Kakamega, Bungoma and Siaya counties are anticipating a larger market with the installation of a new milk processing plant.

The plant was built by the German and Dutch governments at a cost of Sh34 million, with Sh22 million coming from the German Ministry of Economic Co-operation and Development. The plant is at Bukura Farmers Agricultural College in Kakamega County.

Bukura Farmers Agricultural College Principal Jackson Simiyu said the facility, which has the capacity to process 10,000 litres of milk a day would start off with 2,000 litres, but gradually increase its output as more farmers take to dairy farming.

“Apart from processing milk into products such as yoghurt, fermented milk and butter, the plant will provide dairy training for interested individuals and groups from all over the country,” he said.
