Fear grips Kilifi hoteliers after Nairobi's dusitD2 attack

KILIFI, KENYA: Hoteliers in Malindi are a worried lot following the terror attack that took place at Nairobi’s dusitD2 hotel.

Led by the North Coast chairlady of Kenya Association of Hotel Keepers and Caterers (KAHC) Maureen Awuor Obunga, the hoteliers now say they are staring at travel advisories and cancellation of bookings by especially tourists from Western Countries.

Awuor said that hotels were currently experiencing bed occupancies of between 10 per cent and 30 per cent and that the situation may worsen if the travel advisories are issued.

She called on the national government to put more emphasis on border security and enhance screening of people entering the country.

“We condemn the incident that has taken place in Nairobi and we would like also to commend the security agencies for their quick response,” she said.

She also called upon foreign countries not to issue travel advisories before analysing the situation as that may dent the hotel business.

Her sentiments were echoed by Franco Esposito who owns the Woburn Residence who asked the government to beef up security at the borders.

Malindi residents also said that the government needed to do more in terms of securing the nation.
