Butali Sugar Mills upgrades its tractor fleet

Butali Sugar Mills Ltd (BSML) in Western Kenya has received a boost of 50 TS 6000 2WD tractors from New Holland Distributor CMC Motors to enhance efficiency of its operations.

The additional 50 tractors bring to 250 the company’s fleet to serve an estimated 30,000 contracted farmers. BSML now owns the biggest fleet of TS6000 2WD tractors in Sub-Saharan Africa.

BSML Managing Director and CEO Sanjaty Patel was upbeat about the mill that currently has a raw cane crashing capacity of 2,500 tonnes per day (TCD), saying the additional tractors would improve ferrying of cane from a radius of 30 kilometres around the factory.

Tractor design

“The robust design of this tractor and the modifications made over the years in the TS Series, keeping the mechanics simple to operate and maintain, have made this tractor ideal for our business,” he says, adding that BSML units are never more than five years old.

New Holland Business Director for Africa and the Middle East Federico Bellotto said the new TS Series has over the years earned a reputation for reliability and manoeuvrability in haulage applications. He said CMC Motors has been selling the New Holland products in Kenya for over 70 years.

CMC Holdings Ltd operates the largest distribution network in East Africa for the sale, service and parts of agricultural equipment. With a staff of 1,000 people, the company operates seven branches in Kenya, one in Tanzania and one in Uganda.
