GMO debate to pose headache for Koskei

By Mwaniki Munuhe

NAIROBI, KENYA: The controversy surrounding the ban on genetically modified products could be the biggest headache for Cabinet Secretary nominee Felix Koskei when he is officially appointed to head the Agriculture docket.

Although former Public Health Minister Beth Mugo imposed a ban on genetically modified products, Agriculture Permanent Secretary Romano Kiome raised controversy recently when he indicated the ban was political and could not be legally enforced.

GMO products have been banned in many countries and the products are largely blamed for the rapid spread of diseases, including cancer.

Recently, cancer has become a leading killer disease, claiming the lives of even children below ten years.

The matter comes at a time when farmers are planting and are waiting for certified seeds from the Government.
