Five suspected thugs were shot dead in separate robbery attempts in Nairobi in the fight against crime and weapons found on them.

Three were killed in Njiru area on Sunday morning in a botched robbery and a pistol with 18 bullets found on them.

Police said the deceased were planning a robbery in the area when an ambush was laid.

The men were traveling in a salon car when police who had been trailing them since dawn ambushed them at about 9.30 am.

The bodies were later moved to mortuary as police announced another suspect escaped on foot.

The fourth one was killed by police along the Southern By-pass after a botched robbery and an AK 47 rifle recovered from him.

Police said the deceased was in the company of two others and were attacking motorists when an alarm was raised.

Langata OCPD Rono Bunei said the gang had robbed motorists using the road, which is under construction. It is the same area that several motorists have been attacked and robbed of their valuables.

The other suspect was killed in Mathare area in another botched robbery.

The shooting brought to eight, the number of suspects killed at the weekend in botched robberies.

Another was killed in Donholm area where a gang had tried to rob a shoe shop and the other in Mlango Kubwa in a botched robbery and a gun found on him.

Another suspect was lynched by a mob in Tena estate and the other in Shauri Moyo area.

Elsewhere in Korogocho, a man was stabbed to death in a brawl on the road. The attackers escaped soon after the attacks.

And police arrested a former police officer over allegations of robbery with violence incidents in Nairobi and a pair of handcuffs found on him.

The suspect identified as George Kamangu was arrested in Ruai area after being trailed from the city centre where a robbery had occurred outside a bank and a customer robbed Sh50,000.

Police say the man with two others had been behind a series of incidents in which people have been attacked outside banks by people masquerading as police.
