Monday December 27 shall be a normal working day and not an extension of ‘Boxing Day’ as earlier expected.

It is a festivity cut short.

Government spokesman Alfred Mutua on Thursday said, “due to the many Holidays this year the Monday, 27, 2010 shall be a normal working day and is not a public holiday.”
Since Boxing Day (Dec 26) falls on a Sunday, it was expected, the following day, Dec 27 (a Monday), would be a holiday.

It happens always but apparently the Government wants Kenya to remain a working and caring nation and not a ‘feasting’ nation.

President Mwai Kibaki already cancelled the traditional state House Christmas celebrations and directed that funds for the purpose be redirected to feed the Internally displaced persons (IDPs).

Kibaki and the First Lady, Lucy Kibaki also instructed that “adequate foodstuffs be made available to the IDPs until a permanent solution is soon found to address their plight.”

Most IDPs shall be spending their third Christmas in camps as the Government struggles to address their plight.

Since 2008, the darkest year for Kenya, these families have never known the joy and warmth of spending Christmas in own homes.Vice President, Kalonzo Musyoka said on Wednesday that all IDPs shall be resettled by the end of 2011.
