Owner of Probox captured on CCTV before Jirongo's death revealed

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has disclosed the ownership of a white Toyota Probox that was captured on CCTV footage shortly before the late Cyrus Jirongo was involved in a fatal road traffic accident.

In a progress report on the ongoing inquiry into Jirongo’s death, detectives said they travelled to Keringet in Kuresoi South, Nakuru County, to trace and interview individuals linked to motor vehicle registration number KDJ 564E.

The vehicle was recorded on CCTV at Eagol Petrol Station, Karai, entering the station shortly after the Jirongo and exiting soon thereafter.

According to statements recorded by investigators, the Probox is registered to William Mutai, the MCA for Keringet Ward and Majority Leader of the Nakuru County Assembly and is managed by his wife.

Investigations established that on December 11, 2025, Mutai’s wife allegedly hired out the vehicle to Denis Kipyegon Koech, who intended to travel with family members to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), Nairobi, to receive their son returning from New Mexico University in the United States.

Denis Koech and his family reportedly left Keringet on December 12, 2025, arriving at JKIA at approximately 5:00 p.m. Their son’s flight landed at around 10:00 p.m., and after completing clearance procedures, the family began their return journey shortly after midnight.

While travelling back to Keringet and upon reaching Karai, near the accident scene, they stopped at Eagol Petrol Station to refill wiper fluid due to poor visibility. During the stop, they allegedly observed Jirongo leaving the petrol station and driving towards Nairobi.

Moments later, the family as per the report claims they heard a loud bang and witnessed a bus dragging the deceased’s vehicle.

 After completing the refill, they exited the station and briefly stopped near the accident scene at the request of a petrol station guard to assist in rescue efforts. They did not alight from their vehicle but used their headlights to illuminate the scene due to darkness and the absence of other vehicles.

The DCI noted that the family claims they reportedly left after other motorists arrived and traffic began building up, proceeding to Keringet, where they arrived at around 6:00 a.m. It was later that morning that they learned the victim of the accident was Jirongo.
