Unregistered booksellers behind piracy, claim publishers

NAKURU, KENYA: Kenya Publishers Association and Booksellers are calling on the government to crackdown on unregistered book dealers in the country.
The publishers through vice chairman Simon Sossion said the unregistered booksellers had flooded the country and were fleecing learning institution by inflating book prices.
"These unregistered booksellers are doing injustices to public schools through inflation of prices for books and other instruction material and the government should move in to crackdown and rid the country of these people," Sossion said.
"The unregistered bookseller are operating in briefcases and have no physical address as required and it is hard to regulate them," he said.
Sossion said the briefcase booksellers were to blame for the shortage of books in some schools.
"Schools are facing deficiency in instructional material and not because all the booksellers are corrupt but some briefcase sellers have invaded the industry and should be eliminated as soon as possible," said Sossion.
He said the unregistered bookseller were also behind spiraling piracy of books in the country.
