Professionals seek role in new dispensation

Professionals have been challenged to get involved in politics and speed up implementation of the new Constitution.

The call was made at a workshop on the Constitution, organised by the Institute of Certified Public Secretaries of Kenya (ICPSK) in Nairobi.

In the new dispensation, although Governors are charged with managing local resources, the appointment is through a political process.

"Therefore, this office needs to be branded for the average voter to realise it is a position occupied by someone able to take care of local resources," said Mr Kamotho Waiganjo, an advocate of the High Court.

Yesterday’s workshop sought to outline the implementation framework of the new laws and identify the role of professionals.

"As an institute, we will be seeking to be considered for inclusion among bodies represented in various commissions or other institutions," said ICPAK Chairman Joe Mwangi.

The Association of Professional Societies in East Africa Chairman Daniel Ichang’i said: "As professionals, we must keep watch on the implementation of the new Constitution."
