Water firm accused of contaminating lake

The Government has accused a water and sewerage firm of discharging raw sewer into Lake Naivasha.

Ministry of Environment officials led by Assistant Minister Ramadhan Kajembe also established the Naivasha Water, Sanitation and Sewerage Company sewer plant could not handle waste from the town.

During a visit, officials from the firm and the Naivasha Municipal Council were taken to task over poor effluent management.

The firm’s Managing Director Eliakim Mwangi and Town Clerk Shadrack Mulanga had a difficult time explaining to Mr Kajembe why raw sewer was being released into the lake.

Mwangi told the assistant minister the company had received Sh10 million to work on the sewer system and treatment plant.

During the visit, National Environment Management Authority officials admitted despite suing the water firm in court, it was still discharging sewage into the lake.

Emuhaya MP Wilber Ottichilo, who had sought a ministerial statement on the matter in Parliament, prompted the visit.
