Students want cancellation re-examined

Gucha District received with shock cancellation of examination results.

The district topped in exam irregularities, with 195 candidates missing their results.

Worst affected was Magena Secondary School, whose 180 candidates had their results.

Parents who flocked the school yesterday morning were devastated.

"I sent a text to the number given by the Kenya National Examinations Council (Knec) and got a reply indicating my son had scored a mean grade of ‘Y’. I don’t know what happened. I am worried about my son’s future, and have no idea who to turn to," said Mr James Omweri.

Knec warned last year that candidates found cheating would be banned from sitting the council’s examinations for two years.

Threat leaflets

A day before the KCSE results were released, leaflets warning the school principal and board of consequences should results be withheld were circulated around the school.

The principal was given an ultimatum to vacate the school if the results are cancelled.

"I did not see anything wrong during the examination period. It is strange there were irregularities in all subjects, something that has never happened before. We suspect sinister motive," said the principal Samwel Otieno.

Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers Branch Secretary Ben Nyaundi appealed to Knec to reduce the ban on students caught cheating.
