Standard praised for bold journalism

The Standard Group has been praised for its bold journalism.Eldoret Mayor William Rono and the business community said the Group was changing lives through insightful television and newspaper stories.

Mr Rono and Eldoret Chamber of Commerce and Industry chairman Charles Mose urged the The Standard and KTN to keep up the good work.

"The company’s print and electronic sections have been highlighting development matters. This is commendable," Rono said.

Councillors Peter Muya and Peter Chomba hailed the media house for its objectivity and fairness in reporting.

They spoke at the Eldoret Sports Club at the weekend when the company feted its vendors in the region and conducted road shows.

Rono, at the same time, praised the Standard Group for partnering with various private and public sector players to champion road safety.

Roads Minister Franklin Bett, Standard Group’s vice chairman and Strategy Advisor Paul Melly, Kenya Roads Board Executive Director Francis Nyagaga launched the "Drive 101 Roads Safety" last week at group’s headquarters on Mombasa Road, Nairobi.

The Group’s Senior manager, Sales and Distribution, Moses Ochola, said plans were underway to open a Savings and Credit Cooperative Society (Sacco) for vendors.

"We encourage the vendors to embrace a savings scheme to assist them meet their financial obligations," Mr Ochola said.

The mayor also announced streetlights would be installed in Eldoret to curb insecurity.

"We are soon going to install street lights to help fight criminal activities. Gangs have been taking advantage of darkness to commit robberies and terrorise residents," Rono said.

Rono said the municipality would partner with the private sector to create a conducive environment for investors in the town.

"Eldoret is one of the fastest growing town in the East and Central Africa and as a council, we will provide basic infrastructure so that we can attract investors from far and wide," Rono said.
