Days numbered for hate speech proponents

Days are numbered for those who propagate hate speech should a proposed law be passed.

Justice Minister Mutula Kilonzo said a Bill seeking to outlaw hate speech has been published.

Speaking while inaugurating the National Cohesion and Integration Commission yesterday, the minister said the law would promote harmony among communities.

Existing vice

"The Act establishing your commission outlaws all forms of discrimination, an indication that already such vices exist. Hate speeches, too, are outlawed although substantively. My ministry will be moving a Motion to introduce a Bill prohibiting hate speech," he told the commission.

He added the Act promotes national cohesion and integration by ensuring discrimination on ethnic grounds does not take root.

"Kenyans have for a long time yearned for cohesion and a state founded on the rule of law and respect for human rights irrespective of their ethnic backgrounds," he added.

Chairman Mzalendo Kibunjia said the task ahead was enormous.
