For God’s sake wear your ‘Sunday best’

By Crystal Okusa

Most men are likely to dress their best during the week to the office, but come Sunday, they wear their not-so-treasured clothes to church. This should not be the case — church, being a place of worship, ought to be the most respected place.

Men who go to church should look presentable and respectful, if not for their own sake, then for God and other churchgoers. Since no church is the same, dress code varies according to your denomination and church. As a rule of thumb, always dress your best, in a respectful and culturally acceptable way — and always according to the weather.

It is inexcusable for the priest, pastor or lay leaders to get the dress code wrong. They are role models and should always dress right — preferably in a suit.

If your church does not have a designated dress code, then when dressing for church, always think: business casual or semi-casual.

If you are visiting a new church, find out if they have a dress code.

Always consider regional tendencies, services in larger cities, often have dressier congregations.

If you are not a suit kind of person, try to dress casual smart: fitting khaki pants, linen pants or even a pair of plain jeans.

Steer away from T-shirts; they will make you look too casual for the day. Try casual shirts that complement your skin colour.

African regalia can also look good if paired with the correct pair of shoes. If you do not want to wear the whole African outfit, break the look with the correct trousers and casual shoes to complement your African regalia.

Invest in casual shoes: Different kinds of laces and leather shoes without laces. Never wear sneakers to church — it just doesn’t sit well.

Because you are going to sit around people for a couple of hours, invest in mild deodorants and colognes.
