Kenyans to make amends at regional event

Kenyan riders in the lower classes hope to make amends when the second round of the East Africa AMU Motocross Championships takes place at Nairobi’s Jamhuri Park racetrack on August 30.

It’s one of the most significant races of the season as it counts towards the sixth round of the H20/Oilibya National Motocross Championship. Ugandans have a big lead after the regional AMU opener at Kampala ’s Garuga racetrack over Easter weekend.

But Kenyan riders in the higher classes impressed at individual grace with Cruze Muigai (MX2), Shivam Vinayak (MX2) and Ivan Guya (MX85) winning their categories.

Tanzanians, who skipped the Uganda meeting, will send 5 riders including Sarah Bjerre at MX 85 and Rebekka Bjerre at MX2.

The lower categories of Kenyan riders had to contend with manifold problems due to wet and slippery conditions at Garuga.

Kenya’s defending 60cc class champion Murigu Njiiri (KTM50) was well on course for greater things until mechanical gremlins set in. On his second lap of the first heat, Murigu had his run stymied with clutch problems. He now wants to turn the table on series leader Arthur Blick of Uganda and retain the AMU trophy at home.

Ugandans enjoyed the numbers, but Kenyans were graceful at individual tactics. It will be interesting to see how Kenyans will fight to surpass the score on home turf.

Shivam Vinayak leads the MX1 at which he has remained unchallenged at home and in the region and so is compatriot Cruze Muigai who is expected to call shots at his MX2 (formerly 125cc class) specialty.

Muigai was a real crowd puller at Garuga what with stunning jumps that left the Ugandan crowd fascinated. So Muigai will have to be extra careful as he tackles compatriot Tutu Maina and Ugandan duo of Jack Evans and Unisan Bakunda whom he beat to second and third at Garuga.

Ivan Guya leads the MX85 after he beat Ugandan, Yannick Duyck, to second slot overall.

Guya made a comeback after a leg injury that had sidelined him for the better part of the season.
