Kenyan Bishops call on Pope Leo XIV to foster Global Unity

[AFP] The Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops (KCCB) expects Pope Leo XIV to unite nations, enabling every individual to take pride in living in any country without feeling inferior. Nyeri Archbishop Anthony Muheria and Nakuru Bishop Cleophas Oseso said the quick election of Pope Leo XIV was a show of confidence the Cardinals have in his abilities. While pledging the KCCB's support, Muheria expressed that the world has high hopes that the Pope will lead the faithful and accomplish significant achievements. "We are behind you and will support your efforts to unite nations," Muheria stated. He emphasised that the Pope is young and energetic, noting that his encounter confirmed the Pope's exceptional listening skills. Having visited Kenya several times, Muheria remarked that the Pope brings new vigour and has a deep affection for Kenya. "We are committed to our mission, which includes preaching peace, love, and unity while being examples to the world," he said. Bishop Oseso urged the Pope to take inspiration from Pope Leo XIII, who led the Church from 1878 until he died in 1903. Oseso highlighted a letter written by Pope Leo XIII, which underscored the importance of uplifting the lives of individuals in communities and ensuring the equality of all nations. He pointed out the need for nations, led by the Church, to bridge the divide between the rich and the poor, as well as between powerful and weaker nations. "Countries are not equal; some are developed, some are developing, and others are referred to as third-world countries. Some nations are wealthier and more powerful than others. We must find a way to promote equality and equity," stated Oseso. Oseso also noted that the letter urged employers to provide workers with jobs that would enhance their lives and lead to positive change. He stressed that the Church must advocate for peace and work to end wars, conflicts, colonisation, and discrimination. Recognising the delicate situation of the world, Oseso remarked that many individuals no longer feel proud to live in it. He emphasised the Church's role in promoting a world that cares for every person and makes it a better place to live. He insisted that since Pope Leo XIV has lived in the USA and South America and visited Africa, he is well-positioned to lead the Church, having encountered diverse communities and cultures. Oseso encouraged Christians to pray for the Pope, acknowledging that the responsibilities he faces are significant and that many will look to him for guidance and leadership. Furthermore, Oseso called on all leaders to follow the peaceful election process that occurred in Rome. "There is no need for bloodshed or war during elections. Leaders can be elected peacefully, and nations can choose individuals with the necessary skills to guide them," he said. He also called for patience as the Pope takes office, reminding everyone that it will take time for him to realise his plans. "The elections were swift because there was no doubt that he was the right person to lead. He possesses the special skills, knowledge, and understanding necessary for a leader," he added. Oseso reiterated the Church's responsibility to champion humanity and improve the quality of life for all individuals, stressing the importance of being the voice for the poor and vulnerable in society. dchege@standardmedia.co.ke
