Angry mob raid Sigowet MCA Rogony's home in protest over killing

Police in Sigowet have detained a suspect believed to be part of a gang of over 50 unruly youths who stormed the home of Sigowet Member of County Assembly (MCA) Kiprotich Rogony on Wednesday.

The gang, reportedly from Kapkeiyo Village in the Kebeneti location, descended on the MCA’s rural residence for allegedly failing to act on the brutal killing of a well-respected village elder just three days earlier.

According to the protesters, the murder suspect is allegedly hiding near the MCA’s home, and they demanded that Rogony take responsibility.

Eyewitnesses reported that the angry mob who were armed with machetes and clubs arrived at the compound chanting slogans and even demanding lunch.

Tension escalated when one resident began recording the confrontation on a mobile phone. Enraged, the crowd started throwing stones at the MCA's house.

As the situation spiralled out of control, Rogony’s wife and children were forced to flee for their safety.

“It took the swift intervention of police officers and concerned villagers to disperse the mob before further damage could occur,” said a visibly shaken Rogony.

“I am deeply shocked by this attack. I have no connection whatsoever to the heinous murder of the village elder. Violence and mob justice are not the way to seek answers.”

Rogony confirmed that the slain elder had previously received threats from the suspect and revealed that reports indicate up to four other individuals may also be under threat.

“This is no longer just a matter of a single murder—this is a dangerous person who must be brought to justice immediately,” Rogony stated.

The MCA called on the Officer Commanding Station (OCS) in Kebeneti to take swift action to apprehend the suspect, urging the national government and security agencies to enhance protection for elected leaders.

“Our lives are at risk. It is time the government treats threats against MCAs with the seriousness they deserve,” Rogony added.
