Haki Africa has condemned the use of force by police officers during protests on Wednesday, July 12.

Equally, they have rebuked the destruction of property by some protestors.

“Haki Africa is disturbed by scenes coming in from different parts of the country as transporters' opposition undertakes protests. We strongly condemn the uncalled-for tear gassing by police of peaceful protestors in Mombasa who were exercising their right to protest peacefully,” said Haki’s Executive Director Hussein Khalid.

“We equally condemn the wanton destruction of property witnessed along the Nairobi Expressway in Mlolongo area. These and other scenes across the country including Kisii, Kisumu and Emali have raised tension and fear among citizens about their safety as the day progresses,” he added.

The protests held on Wednesday saw some people shot and seriously injured while property was destroyed.

On its part, the St John ambulance, a non-profit organization, assured Kenyans of its charitable ambulance services and immediate rescue in case of an emergency.

“Emergency response vehicles have in the past been met in the melee of chaos, confusion and running battles between the Police and protestors while on duty saving lives. Despite today’s protests happening across the country, St John’s charity emergency services are available and accessible.”

Additionally, St John urged protestors to respect and give way to any emergency service vehicles and crew on their path and desist from any actions that would damage the unit or taking hostage of this life saving ICU on wheels.
