Five suspects linked to murder of Mpesa agent in Nairobi arrested

Five people believed to be behind the murder of an Mpesa agent in Nairobi have been arrested.

The five identified by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) include Kevin Oduor, John Chege alias Samir, Leroy Omondi alias Leon, Mutahi alias Issa, and Clifford Bogonko.

According to DCI, the suspects, who were arrested in Nairobi's Kayole area III are also connected to a series of robberies reported in various parts of the city for the past two months, 

The five suspects believed to be armed and dangerous were arrested and a firearm recovered in a sting operation led by detectives based at DCI Starehe.

The DCI said the suspects are responsible for the murder of a 37-year-old woman in Nairobi on June 26.

“Following an intelligence-led operation that also included a specialised team of detectives from the DCI Nairobi regional command, the five were traced to their hideout in Kayole and arrested,” the DCI tweeted. 

The woman identified as Beatrice Okumu had just closed her Mpesa shop at around 10 pm before a three-member gang on a motorbike accosted her.

“After ransacking her handbag for money and other valuables, the thugs shot her leaving her lifeless body sprawled on the ground in a pool of blood, before they escaped. Detectives later collected two spent cartridges of 9mm caliber at the scene,” the DCI said.

A motorcycle belonging to one of the suspects, which was being used by the suspects as a gateway means has also been impounded.

The suspects are currently in custody assisting detectives with investigations, before being arraigned in court.
