Nairobi County is planning to designate new garbage collection points in the sub-counties to tame illegal dumping.

Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja claimed the previous regime had failed to pay contractors who downed their tools months before the August polls.

For this reason, mountains of garbage had been piling up not only in the estates but also in the city centre which triggered a public outcry. He said the new dumping sites will allow the residents in all 17 sub-counties to have places where the garbage will be collected.

"I already met sub-county administrators and officials from the environment department, we are going to publish the designated collection points for the public to know where they will be dumping," Governor Sakaja said.

Once the areas have been identified, Sakaja said the county will conduct crackdowns on those who will be found dumping illegally.

He urged the residents to play their role to ensure that they litter properly so as to discourage the habit of illegal dumping.

"So far we have collected 76,000 tonnes since we came in. Once the areas are identified, we will expect everyone to ensure we have a clean city," he said. [
