Nominees of county executive positions in Murang'a detailed the development programme they will initiate to improve the standard of living for the one million-plus population.

The nominees appointed by governor Irungu Kang'ata appeared before the county Assembly committee on selection for vetting where they explained their strength to support the development agenda.

They told the committee chaired by Speaker Johnson Mukuha that they have vast experience and wide knowledge to help spur the growth of the county through increased revenue collection, automation of services, improving health care, and support for youth programmes.

The team of eight MCAs included Majority Leader Francis Kibe wa Sarry and his deputy Liz Muthoni Mbugua.

Economic hubs

Issues that dominated the vetting exercise included the poor state of the health facilities, how 1,400 acres of land that Delmonte Kenya Limited surrendered will be utilised by the county government, Northern Water Collector Tunnel intakes in the three rivers among others.

Nominee Kimani Mugo for Trade, Tourism and Industrialisation said if given a chance, he will work with investors to establish economic hubs and map out tourism attraction sites.

He said there are posh hotels coming up along the banks of Sagana river, adding that he will reach out to more to create tourism attraction points to assist in revenue generation.

"We shall identify where Murang'a Industrial Park will be established for the purpose of promoting eco-industries among other opportunities to support trading activities," said Mugo who in 2007 faced the late John Michuki in the Kangema parliamentary seat.

Dr Fredrick Mbugua, a consultant gynecologist, said if approved he would ensure the 515 health facilities have adequate drugs. Mbugua recounted the challenges the health sector has gone through as patients suffered, prompting health workers to buy drugs for them.
