Kenyans went to the polls on August 9 to vote for their leaders, including the fifth President of the Republic of Kenya. An hour after voting ended, returning officers at polling stations started uploading Form 34A on the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) portal.

As the country eagerly awaits to see who will be the next President of Kenya, Forms 34A, 34B and 34C will be a point of reference until the vote tallying ends. What are they used for?

Form 34A is used by the IEBC to tabulate presidential election results at polling stations. The form is filled in by presiding officers after counting votes. It shows the votes each presidential candidate got, the total number of registered voters in that station, and the rejected, protested, disputed and valid votes. The candidate or their representatives/agents must sign and certify that the information on the form is accurate. The form is then uploaded to the IEBC portal.

Form 34B - This form is used to collate all the presidential results from the constituencies. It shows the polling station code, station name, number of registered voters, vote totals for each candidate, and the number of valid votes cast. This form is submitted at the National Tallying centre for verification before Form 34C is created.

Form 34C - This form is an amalgamation of all Form 34Bs. It is the document Wafula Chebukati, the IEBC chair, will use to declare the country's fifth president.
