Kenya on Wednesday morning failed to win a medal in the men's 1500m finals after Timothy Cheruiyot and Abel Kipsang finished sixth and seventh respectively at the World Championships in Oregon.

Cheruiyot clocked a seasonal best time of 3:30.69 followed by Abel Kipsang who completed the race in 3:31.21.

Jake Wightman of Great Britain produced a stunning run to take 1500m gold.

Wightman held off Norway’s Jakob Ingebrigtsen down the stretch to win the event in a time of 3 minutes, 29.23 seconds.

Ingebrigtsen, who won the gold medal at the 2020 Summer Olympics, captured the silver medal in a time of 3:29.47 and Spain’s Mohamed Katir won the bronze after finishing in a time of 3:29.90.

Kipsang shot to the front from the start, while Ingebrigtsen settled in five back with an outside line.

With two laps to go, Ingebrigtsen overtook Kipsang and Cheruiyot as the pack split.

At the bell for the final lap, it was Ingebrigtesn, Kipsang and his compatriot Cheruiyot and the British pair of Josh Kerr and Wightman who accelerated away.

Wightman played Ingebrigtsen at his own game and broke at the bend, pulling away into the home straight.

The Norwegian tried to counter, but Wightman held on for a fantastic win.

Wightman's win broke a string of five straight world 1,500 titles by the Kenyans.

Cheruiyot has not won a race season, finishing second in Doha, third at Prefontaine Classic and second at the Kenyan trials.
