Journalist Winnie Mukami is dead. Mukami died on Thursday, March 18, at Nairobi Women’s Hospital from Covid-19 complications.

The former NTV news anchor is the latest journalist to succumb to the virus after Radio Citizen Managing Editor Robin Njogu.

Njogu died on Monday, March 16, at Aga Khan Hospital where he was undergoing treatment for Covid related complications.

ICT Cabinet Secretary Joe Mucheru paid his respects to Njogu describing him as a “consummate journalist who contributed heavily to the development of radio news in the country.”

“I’m saddened to learn of the passing on of Robin Njogu and his mum. Robin was a consummate journalist and contributed heavily to the development of radio news in the country. Sad loss for his young family, RMS, and the media fraternity in the country. May God comfort his family,” tweeted Mucheru.

Covid-19 has killed 2.67 million people, 1,925 of them in Kenya, which has recorded 115,000 cases since March last year.

Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe asked county governments to increase ICU beds as Kenya experiences the third wave of Covid-19. “We are going to emphasize home-based isolation and care because of how stretched hospitals are,” said CS Kagwe.

Kenya on Wednesday reported 1,279 new Covid-19 cases out of a sample size of 7,450, a positivity rate of 17.1 percent.
