Another senior police officer killed in Kapedo

A chief Inspector of Police and his driver were last night shot dead at Ameyan bridge in Tiaty constituency, Baringo County.

The duo was ambushed on its way to Kapedo trading centre to join the team of multi-agency security personnel carrying out a massive operation in the troubled area following the killing of senior General Service Unit (GSU) Emadau Tebakol last Sunday by bandits.

According to Rift Valley regional commissioner George Natembeya, one of the officers is the Commander Rapid Deployment Unit at the two camps based in Lomelo and Kapedo.

Natembeya said the senior officer was returning to his operation base after burying his mother.

The shooting happened almost at the same spot where Tebakol was shot dead by armed bandits last Sunday.

The killing came hot on the heels of the recovery of six bodies of people believed to have been executed after being rounded up in a bar at Chemulingot trading centre on Tuesday night by unknown people.

The families identified the bodies at Kabarnet Hospital mortuary Thursday.

The bodies were recovered at Arabal, some 129 kilometres from Kapedo-the epicentre of the bandit attacks.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i promised to act firmly on the lawlessness in the region saying the government would not tolerate criminals operating in the region under the guise of banditry.

"It is a clear case of murder. There was no conflict. It was a premeditated ambush that was targeting our deputy director of operations at the General Service Unit. We must stop pretending and put things candidly," Matiang’i said on Tuesday.
