Petitioners in schools reopening case asked to properly serve respondents

The high court has asked eight petitioners in a case challenging the Government’s plan to reopen schools to ensure that the four respondents in the case were properly served.

Kisii High Court Judge, Justice Anthony Ndung'u said that only the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development which is the third respondent in the case had sent an advocate to court.

Justice Ndungu said the matter before him was of national significance and that it was important for the petitioners to ensure they followed all the legal procedures.

Michael Otieno had filed the petition on behalf of other seven petitioners at the Kisii High Court against the intended reopening of schools without them being pandemic compliant as per guidelines issued by the United Nations.

The petition also challenges the selective virtual learning programme by the KICD through a media broadcast to schools disadvantaging state pupils and students who lack access to electricity, electronic devices, television sets, radio and network signal in their areas.

Mention was set for June 23.
