At least 1000 families in Kasipul constituency will have clean water after the national government began drilling a Sh10 million water project.

Kasipul MP Ong'ondo Were yesterday officially launched drilling of the borehole christened Kamiera Water Project located at Kachien North Location.

The project which is being implemented by a government agency, the Lake Victoria South Water Works Agency will be completed after three months.

Mr Were said the project is expected to alleviate the perennial water shortage in the area.

"This measure has been taken to cushion residents from perennial water shortage. I urge them to utilise the project well," Were said.

The project is also expected to benefit the neighbouring villages such as Masaka, Ogango and Kawere.

Were said the construction work involves establishing water distribution points, urging residents to venture into other meaningful economic activities like agriculture.

"Agriculture is the backbone of the economy of our country. Let residents participate actively in crop production," Were said.

Lake Victoria South Water Works Agency's Clodious Oduor said the borehole will produce 3000 litres of water per hour.

"The drilling of the borehole will take four days, other physical infrastructure will then be completed within three months," said Oduor.

Were said similar projects will be undertaken in other parts of the constituency as such as Soko Kawino, Kuoyo Secondary School and Mawira.

Jane Auma, a resident of Kachien said many women spend a lot of their productive time looking for water.

"We trek over five kilometres looking for clean water to drink. This makes waste a lot of time," said Auma.
