I sold chang’aa to raise school fees — Babu Owino

Embakasi East MP Babu Owino on Thursday revealed that he had to sell illicit brew to raise fees for his secondary education.

Speaking during an interview with comedian and radio host Jalang’o on Facebook, Babu said this was the only way he could get some money to help his ailing mother.

“We would get the ingredients late at night or very early in the morning because at those times there is little chance of being caught.

“At times we would prepare the brew as late as 3am and I still had to study and sleep,” he said.

At the time, the legislator was a student at Kisumu Boys and at the end of four years he scored and A- of 78 points.

This, he considers a failure of some sort because he believes were it not for the troubles at home he would have scored a straight A.

“I am a lethal mind. Were it not for the ‘business’ I am sure I would have scored A plain because throughout my stay in high school I was among the top three,” he said.

Further, Babu said he used to tutor his fellow students in form four and was extremely good in Math, Chemistry, Physics and Accounting.

During the interview he also spoke of his time at the University of Nairobi, saying he got admission to Egerton University to pursue Business Management but felt he was too good for that.

He opted to pursue A-levels in Nairobi and got a number of diplomas before enrolling for an Actuarial Science degree at the University of Nairobi.

“I graduated with a First Class Honours degree and shortly afterwards I started pursuing a Master’s degree,” he said.

Adding that in the next few years he hopes to have a couple of Masters Degrees in addition to his two undergraduate degrees in Actuarial and Law.

Today (Friday), Babu intends to tutor KCSE candidates on Facebook and will focus on Mathematics.

“Kindly inform the candidates you know to tune in with a pen and paper. Hii itakuwa noma you must watch,” he said.
