Couple suspected of killing their newborn baby detained

A court has ordered a couple suspected of killing their six-hour-old baby and dumping it in a pit latrine to be detained.

Senior Resident Magistrate Rose Ombata directed that Emily Chebet, 32, and her husband Peter Mwangi, 36, be held at Bahati Police Station for 10 days as detectives investigate.

Ombata made the orders following a miscellaneous application by Sergeant Richard Situma.

Situma, the lead investigator, said they required time to conduct a post-mortem on the body and to get the accused persons' medical reports.

He said the time sought would also enable them seek DNA tests from samples collected from the baby.

The couple allegedly murdered the baby soon after birth on February 8, 2020, at their Umoja Estate in Lanet, Bahati sub-county, Nakuru.

The case will be mentioned on  March 4 when the couple is expected to take plea.
