Lonyangapuo lauds Moi's peace efforts

West Pokot Governor John Lonyangapuo (pictured) has lauded former president Daniel arap Moi for the peace initiatives among communities living in Elgeyo Marakwet, West Pokot and Turkana common boundaries.

Prof Lonyangapuo said even after retirement, the former Head of State continued to oversee the mediation efforts among the Government, leaders and communities towards ending conflicts brought about by cattle rustling.

The governor said Moi’s national pillars of peace, love and unity helped in building cohesiveness and stability across the country.

"Despite his advanced age after retirement, Moi frequently asked me to preach peace in areas affected by conflicts. He was passionate on the need for unity of all communities for better livelihoods,” said Lonyangapuo.

The governor who spoke in Kitale yesterday said the former president mentored most leaders in the country, adding that a huge chunk of the Kenyan population benefited from the free milk programme in schools that was introduced in 1979 by Moi.

The Late president Moi was passionate in the word of God, education and unity of all communities. Lonyangapuo praised Moi for his input in development of churches and schools in semi-arid regions saying it has assisted in improving the living standards of residents.

"What he emphasised more is the need for residents in all regions to educate their children and also raising them through religion.”
