Kanu leaders from Nandi and Uasin Gishu counties yesterday eulogised former President Daniel arap Moi has an astute statesman who meant well for the country.

Speaking yesterday in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu Kanu chairman David Chepsiror and his Nandi counterpart Paul Sambai said Mzee Moi's rich legacy in development, peace, love and unity should be emulated by all.

“From transport, education, health, agriculture, environmental and many other sectors, Mzee Moi's efforts to turn the country around were commendable," said Mr Chepsiror.

"These achievements stand to date and their firm foundation will not be shaken.”

He noted that Moi also played an integral part in alleviating suffering of the common mwananchi.

“Through his motto ‘harambee’ the needy in society were assisted. We are thankful for all that he did to alleviate problems of his people,” Chepsiror said.

Mr Sambai said through Moi's love for education, schools across the country were modernised.

Learning was made accessible to a majority of Kenyans.

“All the magnificent learning institutions in the country were built through Moi's effort," said Sambai.

"His development record will stand for centuries."

Former Housing assistant Minister Jesse Maiz said he attributes his success in government service to Moi.

“Moi plucked me from the classroom. I was a teacher. He made me an assistant minister after ensuring I became the Eldoret South MP. It will be hard to fill Mzee Moi's shoes. This country has lost an insightful leader,” said Mr Maiz (pictured).

The former President died on Tuesday morning. Announcing the death, President Uhuru Kenyatta said: "It is with profound sadness and sorrow that I announce the passing of a Great African Statesman, H.E. Daniel Toroitich arap Moi."
