Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology (JOOUST) is set to become a Centre of Excellence in food security.
According to Vice Chancellor Prof Stephen Agong’, the university is reviewing its five year strategic plan to help meet the objective.
The plan involves investing on research which will lead to innovation in alternative sources of food.
The institution will also launch an outreach programmes in which the university will support the community in promoting food security.
Addressing journalists during the university’s consultative meeting in Homa Bay town, Agong’ said the university is committed to inventing alternative sources of food.
“We are reviewing our strategic plan to enable us solve the main problem of food insecurity that affects the current society. We are soon completing the review,” he said.
He said time had come for Kenyans to start thinking of alternative food sources to enhance food security in the country.
According to the VC, the university based in Bondo constituency, Siaya County is committed to addressing livelihood of rural dwellers through science and technology.
He said the strategic plan also aims at promoting the Competency Based Curriculum (CBC) whose implementation is ongoing.
“As a university we are preparing to help implement the CBC. We want to produce graduates with skills that will help them address societal problems,” said Prof Agong’.
He urged students who did not qualify to join universities to enroll in technical and vocational training institutions for practical skills which may enable them get sources of income.
