Kenya calls on Africa to partner and curate history

Cabinet Secretary for Sports, Culture and Heritage, Amina Mohammed (pictured) has called upon African countries to come up with one website for their various cultures.

While addressing a United Nations meeting in France, Amina urged Africans to partner with United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation in making the dream a reality.

Amina said Africa has a very rich and diverse history and it was necessary to jointly curate it in a website.

The Unesco meeting discussed a wide range of issues, including ways to use collective African histories to shape the continent's identity.

“I urge Unesco and ministers of culture and heritage across the African continent to come together and document their history. This would make it easily accessible for both those within and outside the continent,” Amina said.

She added: "It is said that when the music changes, so does the dance. The world is changing, and online platforms have now become the treasure trove of information."

The calls for one website comes after Kenya digitised her cultural history, following a collaboration with Google Arts and Culture. The shift has seen Kenya develop an e-museum.

In the meet, Africa was observed as having been a victim of misrepresentation, but through progressive education, concerted efforts have been in place to amplify the African voice internationally through literary works by celebrated African writers.

Promotion of African heritage and cultures has also received a boost through championing of various monumental projects by Unesco.
