A new office block for Meru MCAs will be constructed at a cost of Sh350 million, assembly speaker Joseph Kaberia has said.

Speaking yesterday, Mr Kaberia (pictured) also revealed that the 10-floor block will be sandwiched between the Meru law courts and the assembly building.

He added that construction will start this year.  The new building will be fitted with two lifts and will boast of an underground parking lot and a cafeteria.

Working space

It will accommodate the 69 MCAs, the Speaker, and other county staff.

“We are building it to decongest our current offices. It will also accommodate nominated MCAs who have offices in different areas in the county," said Kaberia.

"It will not only save the assembly a lot of money in rent, but ensure MCAs have a conducive working environment."

The MCAs currently occupy former offices and debating chambers used by the defunct Meru County Council.

Kaberia stressed the project will be implemented in phases and might take up to three years for construction to be completed.

Inadequate funds

He said this is because funds that are currently available are not adequate. He added that the block's design was done by county staff at no cost.

At the same time, Kaberia said the county government was procuring land to build a Sh35 million speaker’s official residence.

He stressed that the National Land Commission had not provided the county with a space to build the official residence and that is why it was being forced to purchase it.
