KEBS lists five maize flour brands with high levels of aflatoxin

The Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) on Saturday listed five maize flour brands that have high levels of aflatoxin.

Through a statement seen by Ureport, KEBS stated that the permits of the brands had been suspended and the manufacturers have been asked to discontinue offering the listed products.

“The respective permits have been suspended and the manufacturers instructed to discontinue manufacturing or offering for sale the affected maize meal products.

“Additionally, the manufacturers are required to recall all the substandard maize meal products from the market and institute corrective actions.

“KEBS has also seized a number of these products and has instructed supermarkets countrywide to remove the same from their shelves,” read the statement in part.

Adding: “The affected manufacturers will therefore be required to institute corrective actions whose effectiveness shall be confirmed by KEBS before the suspension of permits is lifted.”

The brands listed are:

  1. Dola Maize Meal
  2. Kifaru Maize Meal
  3. Starehe Maize Meal
  4. 210 Two Ten Maize Meal
  5. Jembe Maize Meal

KEBS also encouraged members of the public to be vigilant and report whenever they encounter sub-standard products.

“We encourage the general public to be on the lookout and inform KEBS upon encountering any products suspected to be substandard,” said KEBS.

Wajibika Na KEBS is a program that allows the public to report cases of substandard products. To Wajibika, verify whether the S-Mark permit on your product is valid by sending the code underneath the S-Mark to 20023 (SM#Code) to get product manufacturing details.

If the details are different, report to KEBS Toll Free Number 1545 during official working hours 8.00 AM to 1.00 PM and 2.00 PM to 5.00 PM, Monday to Friday.
