Boy, 16, stabs stepfather to death over plate of food

A fight over food turned fatal in Chepkoin village Belgut Constituency after a 15-year-old boy stabbed his 50 years-old stepfather to death over the plate of food for supper.

Belgut Officer Commanding Police Division (OCPD) Phillip Okello said after committing the crime, the minor fled the scene and attempted to take his own life in his hideout in an attempt to evade arrest.

"Around 10 Pm Sunday, the deceased picked a quarrel with his stepson over supper and the angry minor, in turn, picked a machete and fatally slashed the old man in the chest," he said

Okello added that when the neighbours reached the scene, they found the deceased, Joel Kipngetich, lying in a pool of blood inside his compound.

"He had a deep cut on his upper chest inflicted by a sharp object. He was rushed to Sosiot hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival," he said.

Okello, said the juvenile murder suspect, a standard six pupils, was arrested hours later in the nearby village where he had fled to and ingested an acaricide in attempt to commit suicide.

"He was rushed to Sosiot hospital where he was treated and discharged in the morning. He is currently in police custody awaiting arraignment in court," he said.

Okello, said the body of the deceased was moved to Kericho county hospital to await postmortem and burial arrangements.
